INDIANAPOLIS - Clarian Health today released a report that reveals record-setting support to Indiana communities. The nearly $1 billion in total community investment - the largest of its kind by any health system in the state - is detailed as part of a comprehensive report that summarizes Clarian’s contributions to the communities it serves throughout Indiana.

Clarian’s 2009 Report to the Community illustrates the statewide health system’s efforts to make substantial investments and provide community benefits - programs and activities designed to offer treatment and promote health and healing in response to identified community needs and that also: improve access to health care, enhance community health, advance medical knowledge and relieve or reduce the burden of government or other community efforts.

As one of Indiana’s largest providers of community investment, Clarian Health - a comprehensive academic health center comprised of multiple hospitals and health centers throughout the state - impacted more than 500,000 individuals in 2009. Almost $500 million of Clarian’s nearly $1 billion community investment went to providing community benefits to Hoosiers, including more than $110 million of free or discounted medical care.

"As turbulent times for the health care industry have resulted in unprecedented challenges for hospitals across the country, I am pleased that we have not reduced our commitment to the most vulnerable individuals and the communities we serve," says Daniel F. Evans, Jr., Clarian’s president and chief executive officer.

Evans continues, "In 2009, our staff trained the next generation of physicians, engaged in thousands of clinical trials researching breakthrough treatments and partnered with hundreds of community organizations to advance our essential mission - to improve the health of our patients and community through innovation and excellence in care, education, research and service."

Clarian’s report offers details on the ways the statewide health system provides community benefits, including, but not limited to: offering charity care to patients who are unable to pay; educating health professionals; maintaining vital community assets such as its trauma centers and its LifeLine Critical Care Transport service; engaging in innovative clinical research; and carrying out community-building activities that go beyond health care to address the underlying quality of life in the communities Clarian serves.
